This Week at Calvin 12-16-21

Calvin Church, 326 7 th St SE, welcomes all who are looking for a church family to worship, learn and
fellowship with us. Worship begins at 10:00 AM with the Fourth Sunday of Advent. The lighting of the
Advent Candles centers around the passage: “For Unto Us A Child is Born”. The fourth candle is “Prince
of Peace”. For Advent Pastor Brian Hofman has chosen the Psalms of lament, songs and prayers that
cry out for God to act and help but also surprisingly express trust in God while waiting. This week’s text
is Psalm 142. The hymns chosen to sing are: “Hark! The Herald Angels Sing”, “In Christ Alone”, and
“Emmanuel”.
At 9:00 AM, Sunday, there are Education Classes for all ages. Each class is picking out gifts for children
of other countries through World Renew. The youth are practicing for the Christmas Eve service.
This Sunday we celebrate Communion. Prepare your hearts to partake in this blessed sacrament. This
week is also the time we collect items for the Christian Needs Center. Their needs include granola bars;
pudding/jello; hamburger helper; juice; soap and toothpaste. The Special Offering is for the Benevolent
Fund.
The Christmas caroling party will be the evening of December 19 th . We are meeting at church at 3 pm
for those that want to carol. We are hoping to be able to carol at the nursing homes by then. Then head
back to church at 5:30 for tavern, chips, ice cream sundaes and hot chocolate, coffee, or lemonade.
Calvin is planning a Christmas Eve Candle Lighting Service at 5:00 P.M. Mark your calendars to join us

The All For Him praise team will lead the singing of: “You Are Holy (Prince of Peace)”, “What a Beautiful Name”, Psalm 80 sung “O Shepherd Here and Lead Your Flock”, “Shine on Us”, and “Silent Night”.
At 9:00 AM, Sunday, there are Education Classes for all ages. Each class is picking out gifts for children of other countries through World Renew.
Next week Wednesday, December 15th at 1:30 PM, the Afternoon Ladies are meeting in the church basement and will be packing bags of goodies for all the children in church to be given away on Christmas Eve.

Hofman’s message will center on Psalm 106 where we declare God’s faithfulness in keeping His
promises and delivering His people. The All For Him praise team will lead the singing of “Everlasting
God”, “Rejoice O Pure In Heart,” “His Mercy is More”, and “Thank You Lord for Saving My Soul.”
This Sunday we celebrate the sacrament of Communion. We need to prepare our hearts and ask God for
the proper spirit in which to celebrate the sacrament. As is custom on Communion Sundays, we donate
to the Christian Needs Center. November needs: Pancake mix, syrup, canned fruit, toilet paper and
shampoo. These can be placed in the blue barrel in the narthex. A Special Offering is designated to the
Christian Needs Center
At 9:00 AM, Sunday, there are Education Classes for all ages. Teachers are preparing valuable lessons
for us all. Come and learn together
This Wednesday, 6:30 PM a Thanksgiving Eve Worship Service will be held. An offering will be taken for
the Center for Financial Education.
Last Sunday there were 119 Operation Christmas Child boxes filled to the brim. Thank you to all who
participated.

The lighting of the Advent Candles centers around the passage: “For Unto Us A Child is Born”. The second candle is “Mighty God”. For Advent Pastor Brian Hofman has chosen the Psalms of lament, songs and prayers that cry out for God to take action and help but also surprisingly express trust in God while waiting. This week’s text is Psalm 44. Song selections include: “Mighty to Save”, “O Come, O Come Emmanuel”, Psalm 44 sung “O God, We Have Heard”, and “Power of Your Love”.
At 9:00 AM, Sunday, there are Education Classes for all ages. Teachers are preparing valuable lessons for us all. Come and learn together.
The church is beautifully decorated and lit with greenery, lights, flowers and banners. On the east side of the church you will see the nativity scene set and lit up for all to anticipate Jesus’ coming.

Next week Wednesday, December 8th at 6:30 PM, the Evening Ladies have Bible Study. They are meeting in the church basement and welcome anyone to join them. to study God’s Word. The lessons are independent, so you can come to the time that works for you.

18, “Cross of Christ”.

noon.
This Sunday is the celebration of collecting the Operation Christmas Child boxes ready to be delivered.
Every gift-filled shoebox is a tool for evangelism and discipleship for a local church around the world.
We thank God that through our decades of delivering shoebox gifts, we’ve shared the Gospel with
millions of children in over 160 countries and territories.
At 9:00 AM, Sundays, Calvin provides Sunday School classes for all ages. Come, join us.

“God of Our Fathers.” Pastor Brian Hofman wraps up the book of Malachi. Malachi 3: 3 – 4: 6 where
God judges those who disregard Him but spares those who honor Him. Calvin loves to sing with the
organ and piano. This Sunday the hymns are: “God of the Ages, Whose Almighty Hand”, “Eternal Spirit,
God of Truth”, “Song of the Prophets”, “Will You Come and Follow Me”, and “O God You Are My God”.
At 9:00 AM, Sunday, there are Education Classes for all ages. Teachers are preparing valuable lessons

This Wednesday, 6:30 PM is women’s Bible Study in the church basement. They will be studying Lesson
11 in the book “Growing Through Life’s Challenges.”

noon.
Operation Christmas Child boxes have been distributed. The return date for filled boxes is Sunday

This Week at Calvin

Calvin Christian Reformed Church welcomes all who are looking for a church home. Calvin is located at
326 7 th St SE. Worship at Calvin begins at 10AM. October 31 st is Reformation Day in the Protestant
Church. There will be a litany and song for Reformation Sunday. The Song of Praise is “A Mighty
Fortress is Our God.”
This Sunday we install our new council office-bearers during the worship service. We welcome the new
members of elder and deacons and express our gratitude to out-going council members for their term of
service.
A video will be shown from Operation Christmas Child “Miracles of Mexico.” Many of the boxes sent
from this area have been going to Mexico. Pastor Brian Hofman continues his messages on the book of
Malachi. This week the text is Malachi 3: 6 -12 concentrating on the proper spirit in which to give our
tithes and offerings. The song of response is “God, Whose Giving Knows No Ending.” We close our
service with “We Give Thee But Thine Own.”
At 9:00 AM, Sunday, there are Education Classes for all ages. Teachers are preparing valuable lessons
for us all. Come and learn together
This Wednesday, 1:30 PM is women’s Bible Study in the Fellowship Hall. Our lesson is #17 “Conflicts –
Strife”. Coffee and Dessert are served with a time of fellowship, as well.

This Week at Calvin

Calvin Christian Reformed Church celebrates communion this Sunday, October 17 at 10:00 AM. We ask God for the proper spirit to celebrate the sacrament that we may repent sincerely of all sin and that by it we shall be spiritually revived and strengthened in faith, hope and love through Christ our Lord. Worship begins with Mandy Viet providing a prelude and accompanying the hymns. They will be: “Great is Thy Faithfulness”, Lead Me, Guide Me”, and “Holy Spirit, Living Breath of God”. The message Pastor Brian Hofman is preaching is based on Malachi 2: 10 – 16. Communion is distributed during the singing of “Just As I Am”. We close our service with “Sent Forth by God’s Blessing”. Immediately following the service, there will be a congregational meeting to affirm the candidates of elder and deacon for council.
The Special Offering this week is for World Renew. As is tradition, Calvin collects items for the Christian Needs Center on communion Sundays. Their needs include: peanut butter, mac & cheese, hamburger/tuna helper, pancake mix/syrup, pasta sauce, spaghetti noodles, canned vegetables (any kind except corn), canned fruit, boxed potatoes, soup, toilet paper, and shampoo.
