This Week at Calvin
Calvin Christian Reformed Church celebrates the Fourth Sunday of Advent focusing on the Christmas Carol "Hark! The Herald Angels Sing" by Charles Wesley. The Family of Jacquelyn and Andy Schroeder will light the fourth candle and read parts of the stanzas of the carol describing the overall theme. The All For Him band will accompany and lead the singing of the beautiful carol. We join together in triumph with all the angelic hosts and proclaim that Christ is born in Bethlehem. We will also sing "Angels, From the Realms of Glory", "O Come, O Come, Emmanuel" and "Jesus Messiah".
Steve Ver Mulm will read the Old Testament reading from Micah 5: 2 - 5a. Pastor Rev. Dr. Nevada DeLapp reads the Gospel from Luke 1: 39 - 45 which will also serve as the text for his sermon. Surrounding the reading of the Gospel, the band will lead the singing of "What A Beautiful Name". Members of the band this week are Jim Viet on electric bass, Bruce Smit on drums, Bob Hughes and Ron De Kok on acoustic guitars, Miriam Hector on keyboard. The singers will be Steve Ver Mulm and Dave Hector, Mary Fedders and Lyn Bulthuis.
This worship service begins at 10:15 AM. We welcome all to praise God through joyful worship, sound Biblical preaching, an inspiring music ministry and continual prayer.
The Greeters will be John & Judy Klocksiem, Coffee Servers - Pete & Mary Attema, Usher - Lynda Bulthuis, Nursery - Troy & Elisa Hughes, Sound System - Mike Feenstra and Power Point - Jeremy Kamp.
Miriam Hector will play a selection entitled "O Come Little Children" on the grand piano with CD orchestral accompaniment for the prelude. Angeli Shieh will play a piano solo of "The Holy City" for the offertory.
Angeli is a foreign exchange student living with Steve and Kathy Ver Mulm. We are thankful for her willingness to share her piano talent in worship.
Sunday afternoon at 3:30 PM Calvin is preparing to go caroling at Good Samaritan, Prime Living and Plymouth Manor. We are looking forward to share Christmas hope, love, peace and joy to the residents. At 5:30 we will meet back at church for some warm soup and fellowship. Please join us for one or all of the activities.
For Christmas Eve we look forward to the birth of Jesus with a service at 5:30 PM. Jesus' birth offers newness, a life turned around and transformed by the power of God. What the angels announced to the shepherds is announced on behalf of all humanity. Our featured Christmas carol is "Away in a Manger". It is a favorite of many people regardless of age. It is one of the first songs learned as a child. As we light the Christ Candle we are assured Christ loves us and is preparing a place in heaven for us. Duane and Gayle Walhof will read and light the fifth candle. Jennifer Van Leeuwen, who grew up in Calvin, now living and working in Sioux Falls, will be the featured flautist with Miriam Hector at the piano accompanying the carols for this service. The carols include: "Away in a Manger", "O Little Town of Bethlehem", "The Birthday of a King" and "For Unto Us A Child is Born." For the prelude Jennifer will play the favorite "O Holy Night." This Christmas Eve we are privileged to witness a baptism. What a joy to welcome a child as God's covenant Child! We will respond with "I'm So Glad I'm A Part of the Family of God". Pastor DeLapp's sermon text will be Luke 2: 1 - 14. To conclude the service each attendee will receive a candle. They will make their way around the perimeter of the sanctuary making a large circle. From the Christ Candle we will pass His light to all as we sing the 200 year old carol "Silent Night." As we leave we carry His light and good news to all we meet. Merry Christmas from Calvin Christian Reformed Church on 326 7th St SE, the church with the new digital sign. Or visit us at calvincrclemars.org to hear past services.
Sincerely, Miriam Hector
