This Week at Calvin

"Be Not Afraid", a phrase found 365 times in the Bible. God must have known we needed to hear that often, like once a day. Calvin Church is following an Advent series with that theme "Be Not Afraid." This year we have had to face the uncertainties and losses of being human on a planet desperately in need of restoration and renewal. As we wait, we offer up our fears to God and hear God's comfort in angel voices: "Do not be afraid."
December 6 is the 2nd Sunday of Advent. Here we light the candle of Love. Our God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life (John 3:16). We light this candle to remember God's love, which brings joy to the world and peace on earth.
Mike Van Otterloo, the President of the Council, will begin worship with welcome and announcements. He will also lead us in the litany for lighting the Advent wreath.
Mr. Sherwyn Bolkema is joining us again this week to lead worship. Sherwyn is a lay preacher from Orange City.
Miriam Hector is planning to play an arrangement of "I Wonder as I Wander", an Appalachian Carol along with "The Birthday of a King." Christmas carols are not sung often enough. So let's not wait until Christmas to sing them. Calvin is planning to sing the familiar carols of "Joy to the World", "O Come, O Come Emmanuel", "Emmanuel", "What Child is This", and 'Good Christian Friends Rejoice".
This week we focus on Zechariah, who had a hard time waiting on God. We, too, lose hope so quickly when it seems God isn't answering our prayers in the ways we hope. We ask that God takes away all the barriers in our lives that keep us from being able to hear God's voice, to know Him, and to love Him with all our hearts. Again, God reminds us to "Be not afraid." Isaiah 41:10 says, "So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God." We will sing a song as we are sent out "How Firm a Foundation" as a confirmation "that He will never forsake us."
Calvin invites you to join us in worship. We have plenty of room to social distance within the sanctuary. It is so good to worship together.

Preparations are being made for a Christmas Eve service on December 24th at 5:00 PM. The theme of Do NOT be afraid" will be summarized with fears that might have been for Zechariah, Mary, Joseph, and the shepherds. We will be challenged on how will we respond when God has a message for us? At this service the Christ Candle will be lit with the singing of "Silent Night". Many other traditional carols will be sung with the organ. Anyone is welcomed to join us that evening.
